While Khan plays his usual charming, self-deprecating hero, Chennai Express belongs to Deepika Padukone. Her Meena is no damsel—she’s a woman of few words but fierce agency. Padukone, a Kannadiga herself, learned Tamil phrases and body language to embody a conservative-yet-rebellious Tamil daughter. The film’s climax, where she wields a machi (knife) to protect Rahul, flips the script on typical Bollywood heroism. Her comic timing, especially in the “Tamil lesson” scenes, remains underrated.
