For a long time, mainstream Indian cinema ignored the mundane. But Malayalam cinema glorified it. Director Aravindan’s Thambu (1978) or Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s Elippathayam (The Rat Trap, 1981) captured the slow decay of feudal Nair tharavads (ancestral homes) with the patience of a documentary.
