Category 3 cable is an unshielded twisted pair (UTP) standard defined by the EIA/TIA-568 standard in the early 1990s. It supports at 10 Mbps over distances up to 100 meters, with a maximum bandwidth of 16 MHz. Before CAT5 took over, CAT3 was the backbone of telephone systems and early token ring networks.
