For example: Saying “30 million people are enslaved today” is shocking. But hearing a single survivor describe being locked in a factory at age 14? That changes behavior. That gets people to donate, volunteer, or speak up.

But psychological research suggests the opposite. In his book The Vanishing Neighbor , Marc Dunkelman cites the phenomenon of “psychic numbing.” When we hear that 1,000 people are suffering, we feel far less empathy than when we hear the story of one specific girl named “Lila.” As Mother Teresa famously said, “If I look at the mass, I will never act.
