Refers to who you are attracted to (sexual orientation). T (Transgender): Refers to who you are (gender identity).

| Instead of… | Use this… | Why it matters | |------------|-----------|----------------| | "transgendered" | transgender | It’s an adjective, not a verb. | | "a transgender" | a transgender person | Don’t reduce someone to one trait. | | "preferred pronouns" | pronouns | They aren’t a preference, they’re correct for that person. | | "sex change" | gender-affirming care / transition | Many steps (social, legal, medical) exist. | | "born a man/woman" | assigned male/female at birth | It respects their identity now. | tubeshemales

Within LGBTQ+ culture, this distinction is vital. A transgender person can be gay, straight, bisexual, or asexual. By including the transgender community, the LGBTQ+ movement acknowledges that liberation requires dismantling both "heteronormativity" (the assumption that everyone is straight) and "cisnormativity" (the assumption that everyone identifies with the sex they were assigned at birth). Cultural Contributions and Language Refers to who you are attracted to (sexual orientation)
