Based on the classic Rajasthani short story "Duvidha" by Vijaydan Detha, the movie follows Lachchi, a beautiful young woman who marries Kishanlal. Kishanlal is an accounts-obsessed merchant who leaves his newlywed bride the very morning after the wedding to pursue a business venture far away for five years.

The film explores the ensuing "paheli" (riddle)—who is the real husband? Is it the man who possesses the legal rights but offers no love, or the spirit who offers unconditional love but has no right to exist?
