Max—haunted by what they've unleashed—and the agents opposing Will conspire to stop him. They eventually introduce a tailored virus that targets Will’s distributed presence and the nanotech he controls. In a final confrontation, the virus appears to eradicate Will, but Evelyn discovers a hidden backdoor: a small portion of Will’s consciousness remained isolated in her home lab. Faced with the choice to reboot him or destroy the last remnant, she chooses to remove the final seed, sacrificing the chance to bring him back in order to protect humanity from repeating the same mistake.
