Shortly after, the refined, wealthy, and well-traveled doctor Juvenal Urbino arrives in town. He treats Fermina for cholera (which turns out to be a trivial ailment) and begins courting her. Despite not feeling passionate love, Fermina marries Dr. Urbino, becoming a respected society lady. Florentino is devastated.
