The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is a 2024 anime prequel that explores the bloody origin of one of Middle-earth’s most iconic strongholds: Helm's Deep. Directed by Kenji Kamiyama, the film is set roughly the events of the original trilogy.

More importantly, it has proven that Middle-earth can thrive outside of live-action. The door is now open for more animated projects—perhaps The Children of Húrin or The Fall of Gondolin .

While the film is named after the King, the emotional core of The War of the Rohirrim is Helm’s daughter, Héra. Notably absent from Tolkien’s original text (where she is merely referred to as Helm’s unnamed daughter), Héra is brought to life by writer Philippa Boyens—an Oscar-winning steward of Jackson’s Middle-earth—and voice actress Gaia Wise.

This is the boldest choice. Directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Blade Runner: Black Lotus, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex), the film uses Japanese animation to tell a Northern European myth.

: Depicted as a formidable, if sometimes reckless, leader who retreats to the Hornburg (Helm's Deep) to make a desperate last stand. Production & Creative Team Directed by Kenji Kamiyama Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

The most striking aspect of The War of the Rohirrim is its visual style. Directed by ( Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex ), the film utilizes a hand-drawn anime aesthetic that feels both fresh and deeply grounded in the visual language established by Peter Jackson’s films.
