Winbox uses a proprietary protocol to communicate with the router. In older versions (including the 2.2.x series), this protocol had documented vulnerabilities where authentication data was not handled as securely as it should have been.
One underrated feature of Winbox 2.2.18 is its scriptability via command-line parameters. You can launch direct connections without the GUI: winbox 2.2.18
