Located near the College of Fine Arts (formerly the old Engineering building), The Welder is a larger-than-life sculpture of a man actively performing his craft. The figure, hunched over a piece of metal, is rendered entirely in Hubay’s signature welded steel.

Born in Pest, Hungary, Hubay began his violin studies at a young age under the tutelage of his father, a dentist and amateur violinist. He later moved to Budapest to continue his studies at the Pest Conservatory, where he was taught by the renowned violinist and pedagogue, Joseph Böhm. Hubay's prodigious talent and dedication quickly earned him a reputation as a gifted young violinist, and he began performing in concerts and recitals throughout Hungary and Europe.
